What is Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a form of mental health treatment based on the theory that individuals are sometimes unaware of the reasons for their feelings, thoughts and actions.  The lack of awareness or understanding these underlying factors can lead to unhappiness and result in troubling feelings and thoughts, difficulty with relationships, poor work performance, or physical symptoms.

A close working partnership with your psychoanalyst or analytically trained therapist helps the patient discover how these unconscious factors affect current relationships and patterns of behavior.  As the patient experiences their unique feelings in the therapy, the therapist helps the patient trace them back to their origins, shows how they have changed and developed over time, and helps the individual to better deal with the realities of their current life. Over time, self-esteem, relationships, behavior, and overall life can improve in deep and lasting ways.
